Part-Time Study

Part-time study at Alliance MBS

This document should be read in conjunction with the University’s Code of Practice (see below link) for postgraduate research degrees which constitutes the central reference document for policies, procedures and good practice at the University of Manchester. It includes the minimum requirements for part-time postgraduate research through part-time study and sets out the responsibilities of the University, faculties, schools and supervisors so that research students know what they can expect from the University. In return, it details the responsibilities of research students so that students know what the University expects of them.

Research Training Programme (RTP)

Part-time students have 2 years to complete the core-assessed course units;

  • Accounting & Finance – 6 assessed units

  • Business & Management - 3 assessed units

  • STIP - 4 assessed units

You can, if you wish, and have the capacity, take all of the required assessment units in your first year of study.  If you do choose to spread them over the first two years, please inform the RTP Administrator (mbs-pgresearch@manchester.ac.uk).  All RTP training requirements should be discussed fully with your supervisory team.

To register for the course units you are taking in Year 1.  Towards the end of September (of starting Year 2), you will need to inform the RTP Administrator of the remaining units that you intend to be registered for.

Part-time students are granted an additional four weeks to submit RTP assignments than students on the full-time mode of study.  The assignment deadlines can be found on our PGR Handbook - http://pgrhandbook.portals.mbs.ac.uk/MyTraining/ResearchTrainingProgramme(RTP).aspx

Annual Reviews

Annual reviews are required for every year of study; this is to ensure you are on track with your research and that you satisfy the review panel to progress into your next year of study.  Annual Reviews may be deemed unnecessary in the Submission Pending period if you are due to submit your thesis within 2 months of the Annual Review period that takes place between June/July.

A request to have the review waived needs to be sent by your Supervisor to your Divisional Administrator so that the request can be considered/approved by your Divisional Coordinator.

Once the Annual Review has taken place and the recommendation to progress into your next year of study has been approved by the PGR Director, your Divisional Administrator will issue a letter to you to confirm you can register for the next year of study.  You are required to register for each academic year.

Student Representation

There is 1 allocated Student Representative per division for each year of study.  Part-time students will fall in the full-time student structure.  Please refer to the table below.
